Who are we

We are the Mathers Family. Our farm is on Barapa Barapa country near Barham NSW on the Murray River and our family has been growing free range pure breed Berkshire pigs since 2010. Now we also farm chooks, cows and turkeys.

We have a mixed background of traditional farming, hospitality, transport and environmental management, have three young kids, lots of Maremma dogs and love living on the Murray River.

We also co-own a little wine bar in Barham called Ivy Joyce, where you can enjoy meat and produce from our farms and other local producers.

Our Values

We recognise that working together with our community and with consumers directly that we are building a more sustainable future for our family and the local community.

We are building a micro-community within our business which will benefit not only those within it but also the environment, biodiversity, increase carbon in the soil, build great relationships with people and the land, and gather and share knowledge and skills.

We believe in farming naturally, without the use of any chemicals and have been doing so since our business began in 2010.

Agroecology

Our family realised early on that farming and producing meat is best done by taking control of the supply chain. This ensures that food can be accessible to the local community and direct to eaters. Sharing this knowledge and infrastructure is part of who we are.

We have achieved this through building our own butchery in 2013, doing our own distribution, helping other farmers on their journey, and more recently, being part of the Murray Plains Meat Cooperative, which have built a micro-abattoir at Barham, owned 100% by farmers for farmers in our community.

Regenerative Farming

In 2020, we were enlightened by other farmers who were farming regeneratively. They were surviving droughts, seeing improvements to their farms and livestock and the environment through careful soil management and stock rotations.

We have wholeheartedly adapted this practice and are 120% dedicated to farming to benefit the environment. Our farm is now home to an intricately linked mix of animals and agroecological farming systems. Heritage breed free range pigs, retired dairy cows, heritage Sommerlad chickens and pastured eggs are all processed locally and sold directly.

SUPPLY CHAIN CONTROL

It's so important to us to do our own butchering and production. We handcraft our own smallgoods and charcuterie and send all our orders from here and via our shopfront for our community. Our butchery is in the Barham township 10km from the farm, and fully powered by solar. We are also co-founders and shareholders in the Barham micro-abattoir, and members of the Murray Plains Meat Cooperative who will own and run the micro-abattoir from sometime in 2023. Between the two facilities we can work with farmers and consumers directly to process all sorts of livestock for our local community, and it's 100% owned by farmers.
